silver manufacturing business of Christofle was founded as a result of the close relationship between brothers-in-law Charles Christofle (1805-63) and Joseph-Albert Bouilhet (1778-1837). As sole holder of the patents for gilding without mercury, Charles Christofle was the first to introduce electroplating of gold and silver to France. The company's utilisation of modern manufacturing techniques in the 19th century allowed them to produce large quantities of silver-plated tableware which in turn enabled them to invest and work collaboratively with artist producing many ambitious masterpieces & grand table services to further their reputation. consequently, they counted Napoleon III amongst their clientele.
