| | PAUL STORR - An outstanding pair of Georgian comports £ price on application By Paul Storr London 1808
Each measure 38 cm tall and weigh 263oz (8190g) combined.
The Arms are those of PRITCHARD of Brosely, Shropshire, for John Pritchard, born 1760, died 1837.
In 1654 a Welsh family named Ap Richard migrated into Shropshire where they
were known as PRITCHARD. John and Ann Pritchard lived and died in
Sutton Maddock and had 6 daughters and three sons.
Born in 1760 the eldest of these boys was JOHN PRITCHARD who became a
banker and solicitor at Bridgnorth and Broseley.
He married Ann Cranage of Coalbrookdale, whose father and uncle had obtained
a patent in 1766 for converting pig iron into bar iron by the use of raw pit coal
instead of charcoal.
John Pritchard died in 1837 having obtained the farm that had been in the Granage
family possession for many years.
John and Ann Pritchard evidently established themselves in the heart of the
Shropshire establishment as their eldest and second sons became magistrates
and Deputy Lieutenants for Shropshire. George, the elder of the two, served
as High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1861 and John, the second son was a barrister
who represented Bridgnorth in Parliament 1863-8.

Jesse Watts-Russell
Jesse Watts-Russell was the son of Jesse Russell (1743-1820) of Newcastle-under-Lyme, who had made a fortune through the manufacture of soap. He married as his first wife Mary (d.1840), daughter and heiress of David Pike Watts of Portland Place, London and cousin of John Constable, the artist. He subsequently assumed by Royal License in 1817 the additional surname and arms of Watts. He was to marry twice more, in 1843 Maria Ellen (d.1844), daughter of Peter Henry Barker of Bedford and in 1862 Martha, daughter of John Leech of Wexford.
These candelabra would have been commissioned for use in the dining room of Ilam Hall, the large Gothic Revival house built for Watts-Russell by the builder and engineer James Trubshaw (1777-1853) to the designs of the architect John Shaw (1776-1832). The house was sold after Watts-Russell's death in 1875, but Biggin Hall in Northamptonshire, another of his houses, has remained in the family. Ilam Hall only survives in fragmentary form, as does the memorial cross in Ilam village, which imitates the Eleanor Crosses and which was raised in memory of Watts-Russell's first wife. Code: prlab

The Cressent bureau plat has been copied by the best parisian cabinet makers of the late 19th century such as Henry Dasson or Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley .

| | A large French late 19th century Louis XV style ormolu-mounted tulipwood and kingwood meuble à hauteur d'appui £ price on application by Cueunières for l'Escalier de Cristal, Paris
the serpentine campan marble above a pair of doors within a scrolling acanthus foliate surround, opening to an interior fitted with two shelves, flanked by a pierced foliate scroll to each front angle, on scrolling feet, 177cm wide, 55cm deep, 127.5cm high (69.5" wide, 21.5" deep, 50" high).
An identical grand meuble à hauteur d'appui, with the same marble top, can be seen in the old Palace of the Grand Duc Wladimir Alexandrovitch (1847-1909) in Saint Petersburg, Russia (see illustration).
This cabinet has been retailed by the firm A l'Escalier de cristal as can be seen in their books where features a design of the present lot. The firm is well known to have delivered furniture to the Russian court and aristocracy and notably to the Grand Duc Wladimir.
The note in the firm's book suggests that it was executed by Cueunières; the veneer, the construction and design of this cabinet confirm this attribution.
L. Cueunières was active in Paris from circa 1870, he had his own stand at the Paris Exposition Internationale Universelle of 1900 where he was awarded the Silver medal. He was regularly working as an ébéniste for the prestigious firm of A l'Escalier de Cristal in Paris, especially for the execution of 18th century style pieces.
