the serpentine Sarrancolin marble top, above two long drawers centred by large a cartouche with scrolling foliate borders, flanked to each front angle with a warrior's bust, on cabriole legs and foliate cast sabots, 132cm wide, 59cm deep, 90.5cm high (51.5" wide, 23" deep, 35.5" high).
This commode is of a unique design, re-employing the bronze mount models of the bureau aux guerriers by Charles Cressent (1685-1768) also known as the bureau de l'Elysée where it can be seen in the French President's office (two other examples are listed: one in the Gulbenkian Collection in Lisbon; the other in Grimsthorpe Castle in England).
The Cressent bureau plat has been copied by the best parisian cabinet makers of the late 19th century such as Henry Dasson or Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley .
