Excellent quality Silver and Gilt Ewer

 £ 4,200.00                        make enquiry

by Elkington Birmingham 1923

13 3/4 inches (35cm) tall

46oz (1430g)

The Presentation inscription reads:

Presented to: William Matthews Esq. as a tribute of esteem, by his Sincere friend Henry Bradley November 1846.

It is interesting to note here the discrepancy between the date the ewer was made and the date of the presentation inscription, needless to say it is impossible that it was made after it was presented! The most likely explanation is that it was made as a replacement after the loss of, or as a pair to the original. The quality of the piece is certainly more consistent with the Victorian period, subsequently it is one of the best quality 20th-century-made pieces we have had.
