Curtis Miranda Lampson was born in Vermont on 21 September 1806. He settled in England in 1830 where he was naturalized eighteen years later. Upon the formation of the company for laying the Atlantic telegraph cable in 1856 he was appointed one of its directors, later becoming its chairman. He was also a Deputy Governor of the Hudson Bay Company and one of the Trustees of the Peabody Trus, The charitable foundation established by his friend and fellow countryman, George Peabody for the relief of the poor in London. Lampson was made a baronet on 13th November 1866
